Momentum & SkySpecs: A Match Made in Tech Heaven

July 25, 2015
Momentum & SkySpecs: A Match Made in Tech Heaven Momentum is proud to announce its recent partnership with SkySpecs, a drone technology company founded in Ann Arbor, MI that recently took the industry by storm with a first-of-its-kind, collision-avoidance system. Like Momentum, SkySpecs is committed to innovation through technology. Since launching in 2012, the company has garnered the attention of acclaimed publications such as Wired, Tech Crunch, The Guardian, Tech.Co and more, largely due to its flagship product, Guardian. In early 2015, Guardian dropped jaws at the Consumer Electronic Show when it displayed a life-like awareness of its surroundings, moving away from obstacles – including people – to avoid collisions. This progressive technology has potential partners lining up. Many saw an opportunity to use SkySpecs’ drones in dangerous or hard-to-reach areas where workers have historically put their health, or lives, at risk. One of those partners, UpWind – a company that maintains wind turbines – sought SkySpecs’ help with turbine blade and tower inspections. Now that the Federal Aviation Administration has cleared SkySpecs to legally fly drones in the US, the company will soon have a presence at wind farms across the country, helping UpWind collect data that zeros-in on possible issues, or repairs. At Momentum, we’re always thrilled to partner with other innovative companies across Michigan on their website design, development and maintenance needs. We look forward to watching SkySpecs’ success grow – after all, for them, the sky truly is the limit.   Make Drone Piloting Easier and Smarter with SkySpecs via TechCrunch Momentum Momentum – provides businesses in Detroit and its surrounding areas with digital services such as web/mobile site design, online advertising, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), email marketing and social media management. (www.seekmomentum.com) SkySpecs The safe, friendly drone company, which enables drones to get “up close and personal” with stuff in the world. A team of four U-M students has founded SkySpecs, a company that will develop and produce autonomous aerial vehicles for commercial and industrial use to safely reach and inspect tall or otherwise hard-to-reach structures, such as bridges and tall wind turbines. The four founders of SkySpecs include Sam DeBruin (BSE CE ‘12 and current CSE graduate student) and Ryan Moore (BSE CE ‘11). Rounding out the team are Danny Ellis, who holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from U-M and who is now working toward a dual master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and Entrepreneurship; and Tom Brady, who recently completed his master’s in Aerospace Engineering. The company currently has two employees in addition to the founders. Although less than a year old, SkySpecs appears poised for success and has raised $100,000 from private investors and business competitions, including $50,000 from placing first in the recent Michigan Clean Energy Venture Challenge. The company had its genesis in the Michigan Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (MAAV) student team, which Ellis founded in 2009 in order to build an autonomous flying robot to compete in the annual International Aerial Robotics Competition (IARC). In 2012, the MAAV team
